About This Yacht

S/V HAPARANDA

A One-of-a-Kind Classic Steel Schooner | Auckland, New Zealand

A distinctive vessel with a remarkable family history, substantial refit and an impressive combination of classic character, sailing capability and modern onboard systems.

Provenance

Construction of HAPARANDA began in 1960 in Australia, launched in 1968, after which she was sailed to New Zealand where she has lived ever since, earning her place as a recognisable, and enduring part of Auckland's living marine history.

Haparanda presents a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial steel schooner with an established record in Auckland's charter and sightseeing market. Designed, built and owned by the Lundmark family, she offers a compelling blend of heritage, versatility and onboard comfort.

Haparanda provides generous space for private cruising, entertaining or continued charter operations. The family began an extensive 12-year refit in 1996 (completed in 2008). Together with a range of more recent upgrades, Haparanda's enhanced electrical systems, accommodation and onboard equipment bring a story that began in the mid-twentieth century, comfortably into the 21st.

Powered by a six-cylinder Gardner 6LX diesel engine, currently showing approximately 1,499 hours on the meter, Haparanda is equipped with a Hundested propulsion and reversing system, complemented by a hydraulic Side-Power bow thruster.

A Vessel with History and Versatility

Haparanda has operated as a charter and sightseeing vessel in Auckland, New Zealand, and is rated to carry up to 30 charter guests plus three crew members.

Her generous interior layout makes her equally appealing as a private cruising vessel, liveaboard-style retreat or platform for future commercial use, subject to applicable survey and regulatory requirements.

The vessel's four-sail inventory comprises a mainsail, fisherman sail, storm sail and genoa. Her three headsails are fitted with ProFurl reefing systems, adding practical versatility to her sailing arrangement.

Accommodation and Onboard Comfort

Haparanda offers a welcoming interior with three private cabins and additional sleeping options to host up to twelve overnight visitors.

The head is fitted with a SeaLand 5000 Series VacuFlush toilet, sink and shower.

Onboard amenities include:

Marine air conditioning by Marine Air Systems (2 units)

Eberspächer Hydronic 10 diesel heating

Extensive audio system with multiple speakers and subwoofer

Television and onboard entertainment equipment

Fisher & Paykel DishDrawer dishwasher

Water-cooled marine freezer system

Separate marine refrigeration system

Marine LPG barbecue

The combination of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration and entertainment equipment makes Haparanda well suited to extended time aboard and entertaining guests.

Power, Propulsion and Hydraulic Systems

At the heart of Haparanda is a Gardner 6LX six-cylinder diesel engine, with approximately 1,499 hours indicated on the engine meter.

Key propulsion and machinery features include:

Keel-cooled engine arrangement

Hundested fixed-pitch propeller and reversing system

Hydraulic Side-Power bow thruster

Hydraulic systems operating the bow thruster, anchor, retractable keel and other vessel functions

Westerbeke 12kW, 50Hz generator

The hydraulic systems and propulsion arrangement provide an unusual and capable combination for a vessel of this type.

Electrical and Navigation Equipment

Haparanda benefits from a recent 24V lithium house-battery conversion, together with associated charging-system upgrades and recent alternator work.

Navigation and communications equipment includes:

Raymarine E120 chartplotter, radar and depth sounder

Autopilot

Raymarine VHF 54

VHF and SSB radio equipment

GME EPIRB

Additional equipment includes two anchors, approximately 100 metres of 12mm anchor chain, bilge pumps and emergency steering.

Water and Self-Sufficiency

For extended cruising and time aboard, Haparanda is equipped with a Sea Recovery Aqua Whisper reverse-osmosis watermaker, providing onboard freshwater-making capability.

Her combination of generator, upgraded house electrical system, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning provides a substantial foundation for comfortable extended use.

Recent Improvements

A number of significant upgrades and renewal works have been undertaken, including:

24V lithium house-battery upgrade

New alternator

New bimini and windscreen

Reinforced stainless-steel stanchions and lifelines

These improvements complement the vessel's substantial 2008 refit and contribute to her appeal as a distinctive classic vessel with a meaningful equipment inventory.
